In what could be Dustin Poirier’s final ever appearance in the Octagon, he takes on pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev in the main event of UFC 302.
Makhachev is currently ranked No. 1 in the entire UFC, and has held the lightweight championship since beating Charles Oliveira for the then-vacant strap in 2022.
No stranger to big-name opponents, he’s since defended the title twice against Alexander Volkanovski – the first via decision and the second a knockout – to take his overall pro record to 25-1.

The mentee of the iconic Khabib Nurmagomedov, his only defeat came nine years ago and since then he has become one of the most feared men in mixed martial arts.
Khabib also fought Poirier, with the Russian claiming a submission victory in 2019 – and as someone who knows the Louisiana native well, has backed Makhachev to get the job done in “the second or third round”.
Poirier has lost two of his last four, with the 35-year-old seemingly ready to hang up the mitts whether he finally wins the undisputed title or not.
He told CBS Sports: “I’m not sure. This could be the last one. I’m not going to climb the ladder again. I’ve been doing this a long time. I’m ready to be a father and be a husband and be home and be into a routine.”
Interim UFC heavyweight champ and TNT Sports analyst Tom Aspinall analysed the bout on his show Fight Lab, with the latest episode now on discovery+.
Aspinall said: “When Dustin senses his opponent is danger, he unloads. He has no regard for his own safety. He’s bloodthirsty. Predominantly, he’s swinging hooks. He’s going in, swinging round the side, uppercuts – looping knockout shots.”
The undercard at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, is topped by the No. 1-ranked middleweight. Heavy favourite Sean Strickland – who lost the crown last time to Dricus du Plessis – takes on Brazilian Paulo Costa.
